Frequently Asked Questions

How do women benefit from being a member of Pi Lambda Chi?

Many women encounter what is known as “culture shock” upon entering college. Pi Lambda Chi has provided a safe place and a home for many of the women who have joined this prestigious organization. PLC strives to preserve Latina culture through outreach and community service in the Latino communities surrounding their campuses, by fulfilling our mission statement. The Sisterhood has gained reputation indicative of our communities to community service, leadership and academics.

PLC offers a network for professional development. PLC women create lifelong friendships that continue beyond college. We have sisters all over the world in many different professions. Pi Lambda Chi sisterhood is a lifelong commitment and sisters are always willing to give a helping hand. Professional development and alumni connections are a continued effort of PLC.

Is Pi Lambda Chi only for Latina women? Who can join?

Any biological woman is eligible to join PLC. In accordance with our constitution; PLC does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability. We also do not discriminate on parental or marital status. We are a Latina sorority because we generally strive to serve Latinas in higher education. ANY women interested in Latina culture is welcome to join. Women from many cultural backgrounds are represented in our sorority: Mexican, Peruvian, Spanish, Native American, Puerto Rican, Dominican, African American, German, Filipino, and Costa Rican just to name a few.

What is the difference between Pi Lambda Chi and other traditional/Panhellenic sororities?

Many culturally based sororities and fraternities were founded because they did not feel that their needs were being met on a college campus, and they needed a support system that would understand the struggles and obstacles of minority populations on college campuses and in life.

Pi Lambda Chi is significantly smaller than most traditional/Panhellenic sororities, which is what attracts many women to our organization. We do not have ‘sorority houses’ like many traditional fraternities and sororities. Our focus is balancing academics, community service, and making lifelong friendships inside PLC and out. Hermanas Por Vida, Sisters for Life!
